George Coffee Estate
Situated on the St. Thomas side of the Blue Mountain, in Jamaica. George Estates is located on 80 acres of prime coffee land and service by the Moy Hall Coffee factory. The property has just recently changed management, with Terracon being the current manager. While property failed to meet expectations in the past, Terracon has revised these expectations to achievable goals and has forecasted 10-15% growth in production for the next crop season, weather permitting (i.e. Hurricane).
Of the 80 acres available to George Estates, only 13% have matured trees. To address this statistic, Terracon will be creating a nursery to facilitate the growing of more trees. Terracon has constructed a storage facility for the larger lot on Mount Zion as well as constructed an irrigation and water system to aid in the cultivation and management of the property.
Both Mango Row and Mount Zion employ local labor and with the properties being 15 minutes from the Moy Hall Coffee factory this will see a reduction in transportation and storage fees.
Having a property in the Blue Mountains has its pros and cons, but we at Terracon believe that the pros outweigh the cons. One of the disadvantages is that the berries take longer to mature, due to the altitude, than those of low land coffees. However, the benefit of this time cycle, is that the berries stay longer and obtain more nutrients from the trees. The berries are larger and produce a stronger coffee for coffee lovers. The benefit of a property in the Blue Mountain does not guarantee an excellent crop as the owners of George Estates has found out from previous management.
Terracon will be implementing an analytical process to George Estates, from inorganic/organic fertilizers and itemized tree analysis, to the usage of different combinations of chemicals for the management of pests. In addition to the proper climate, fertilizing and pest control are two of the most important ingredients to a true coffee tree. Both of theses elements can be controlled.
Terracon will be seeking the best berries from the coffee trees without dramatically stressing the trees, because as individuals in the coffee industry know, a dramatically stressed tree will not produce for the following crop season.
